Making our Matisse inspire cut paper designs was the most work I have ever put into an art piece. It's also one of my favorite are pieces of have ever done.
The first step was to choose two sources of inspiration. The two that I picked was Indie music and Irish culture. After we had chosen our inspiration, we did a little research and then print out some pictures as resources. Then we had to create eight thumbnail sketches. Four were for Indie music and 4 for for Irish culture. Next, we drew two final sketches out of our favorite thumbnail sketches. I thought that my Indie music sketch turned out better than Irish culture one so I decided to use that for my final. The rectangles represented The 1975 , which is a big band in the Indie music genres. I then traced my design onto a piece of tracing paper and transfer it onto a black sheet of paper. In order to know which areas would be white, I used a white colored pencil to color in the white parts. I then took my X-ACTO knife and on a cutting mat cut out all the white areas.
There were many thing I learned during this project. The most interesting, fun, and at times frustrating tool I used was an X-ACTO knife. I have had used an X-ACTO knife before so I knew what to do, although that didn't make it any easier to use. One of the reasons I chose the Indie music one was because it only used straight lines and I thought that would make it easier. I had a hard time making sure the lies were straight and even. I kinda ended up cutting wrong areas but they were easily fixable. In reality I like using the X-ACTO knife.
I had many challenges while making final product. For one, while coloring in my design, I ended up coloring areas that were not supposed to be white, and missing areas that were meant to be white. That really messed me up later when I was cutting out the white piece. Luckily I found ways to fix those problems. A second problem I faced had was that many of my pieces were too thin and would break off or I would miss a cut and rip off a piece on accident. I almost lost the pieces that fell off. Those were the only major challenges I faced.
There was a lot of planning so this project could be successful. First, you had to do research and find inspiration just to even start sketching out thumbnails. Also, you had to think about every detail and how to get them right. At first I didn't realize how many thin black lines had to be cut in order for my creation to have definition, and I had a TON of thin lines, until it was too late and I had already chosen Indie Music. This is a project that you have to plan out every single detail or your creation will not go smoothly. At first I didn't understand why you would need to plan out a art piece until now. I thought art was always just spontaneously and was wrong to plan it out but, I've learned my lesson and will not complain when we have to plan out a future project because it will be for our best interest.
